Plate VI from the Sydenham Society’s 1851 issue of William Hunter’s The Anatomy of the Human Gravid Uterus, printed from the original copperplates of 1774.
After an illustration by Jan van Rymsdyk, this anatomical engraving depicts a full-term foetus in utero, with the uterus and abdominal wall opened and the pelvic bones shown in section. Hunter’s atlas brought detailed observations from dissection into medical illustration, forming an important historical work in the study of pregnancy and obstetrics.
Combining anatomical detail with the distinctive artistry of early medical illustration, this original 19th-century print is of interest to collectors of historical anatomy, medical historians and those drawn to anatomical art.
Published by the Sydenham Society, London, 1851.
Condition: page fold and foxing; waterstaining present.
Highly sought after by collectors, obstetric historians, and interior designers, this Hunter copperplate engraving combines scientific rigour with historical artistry, making it a striking addition to libraries, study rooms, or medical collections.

★★★★★ Instant talking point
“I bought one of Room Four's antique anatomical prints for my study and it's become the first thing visitors notice. The detail is incredible, the print quality is razor-sharp, and it has that perfect blend of science, history and art. It looks like something you'd find in a private medical library.”
