The Literary Life of the Late Thomas Pennant, Esq. by Himself

C. 1793

The assumed first edition of a captivating book. Features include marbled and leather quarter binding adorned with gilt decorated title on the spine. Bound by J.Mathieson, Bookbinder & Stationer, Aberdeen.

While the book exhibits slight rubbing on its extremities due to age, it retains its charm remarkably well. The binding joints, though gently showing signs of cracking, still preserve the book's essence. Notably, the front endplate bears the bookplates of previous owner W Burnett and some indistinct inscriptions in pencil.

Within the 144 pages lie engraved artworks, including a portrait frontispiece and an engraved plate showcasing the grandeur of Fountains Abbey. This edition, however, lacks the folding hand-colored plate that is often absent in other copies. Also absent is the portrait plate of the Reverend John Lloyd, referred to on the front page and obtainable separately at Mr. Mazel's establishment.

Features: Dimensions 23.5cm x 18.5cm

  • Antique aquatint portrait frontispiece after Gainsborough
  • Engraved view of Fountains Abbey by Moses Griffith
  • Engraved portrait of The Rev. John Lloyd by Mazel after Griffith
  • Quarter bound cover.

The Advertisement included in the book adds a layer of historical significance. Pennant, the author, humorously states his "authorial existence" ended in 1791, while the actual passing occurred in 1798. Pennant's global wanderings and vivid descriptions bring to mind the legendary travelers of yore, evoking Gemelli Carceri and others who continue to captivate readers today.

The Appendix enriches the book with reprints of 8 Tracts, including the notable "Of the Patagonians," originally issued in 1788, limited to just 40 copies. Among the four plates within this copy, the image of John Lloyd is frequently absent, making this edition particularly valuable.

Some foxing to first few pages in particular frontispiece and title page and last few pages of text / end papers: Otherwise clean, legible and readable throughout.
