Plate XI, "K Smrti" (To Death), depicts a solitary figure collapsed within a church interior, a sword resting across the body. Created by Maxmilián Pirner for the celebrated 1893 portfolio Démon Láska, the composition explores the tragic and destructive aspect of love, rendered in the dramatic and atmospheric style of Czech Symbolism.
Pirner's celebrated thirteen-part cycle on the power of love follows different stages and consequences of love, including youth, fulfilment, loneliness, obsession, scandal, crime, death, and old age.
