The Gnu "The g-nicest work of g-nature in the zoo” Dutch settlers on their way to the South African interior named this species “wildebeest” due to their resemblance to wild cattle. Another common name of this species “gnu” is said to have originated from the Hottentot name t’gnu, which refers to the repeated calls of “ge-nu” made by the male during the mating season.
