*The Parkes Museum was founded in 1876 in memory of Edmund Alexander Parkes, regarded by many as "the father of modern hygiene". Although open to the public, the museum's main purpose was as a teaching aid, with exhibits chosen to illustrate defects in material or construction rather than for their appearance. The museum was closed in 1962, as it was no longer seen as relevant to training needs.
