Angels and Skulls - iron fireback fragment circa 1664 -1667 with the allegorical depiction of the Transience, depicted as King David making an atoning sacrifice of an Ox.The king kneels in front of an altar against which his sceptre stands.Behind him stands a bearded man and an angel above the altar with sword in one hand and a skull in the other. Surviving fragment from larger whole capturing all the drama of the story. The scene is surrounded by a pearl rim and would have been marked at foot with casting marks for 1664(?) 1667(?). Maker unknown.
