From John Lizars’ Famous Anatomical Atlas
This print comes from A System of Anatomical Plates of the Human Body, published in Edinburgh between 1823 and 1827 by the Scottish surgeon and anatomist John Lizars.
The plates were engraved on copper by his brother William Home Lizars, and each engraving was painstakingly hand coloured, a time-consuming process typical of early nineteenth-century anatomical atlases.
Scholars have described the atlas as one of the most elegant anatomical works of the nineteenth century.
Reference works citing this atlas include:
Cushing L313 · Heirs of Hippocrates 1436 · Waller 5950 · Wellcome III: 531.
