This striking vintage anatomical illustration, titled Plate IX, presents a beautifully detailed study of the human torso. Rendered in the classical style of early medical teaching charts, it showcases the heart, lungs, liver, stomach, and intestinal system, with arteries and veins highlighted in vivid red and blue. Fine line work, subtle shading, and labelled reference points give the piece its authentic period character.

Produced using traditional copperplate techniques, this authentic antique print showcases exceptional scientific accuracy and fine line work.
Ideal for collectors, medical historians, and interior designers, this rare anatomical artwork makes a striking statement in studies, libraries, and period interiors. A genuine original antique medical illustration, perfect for those seeking historic anatomical art with provenance and character.
*John Lizars studied with Edinburgh surgeon John Bell and later taught anatomy and surgery in that city. John's brother William Home Lizars (1788-1859) engraved all of the plates on copper. "The book was costly to produce, for the engravings or etchings were, as usual, time-consuming, and the coloring was done skillfully and painstakingly by hand" (Roberts and Tomlinson, The Fabric of the Body, 504-505). "This superb atlas is certainly one of the most elegant works of the nineteenth century" (Cushing L313). Heirs of Hippocrates 1436; Waller 5950; Wellcome III: 531.
Please note these plates have been around for almost 200 years and may show minor spotting (foxing), toning, dust marks and minor closed tears to the outer margins.
