A striking vintage anatomical plate (LXXXVI) depicting the human digestive system in vivid detail. Features cross-sectional views of the liver, gallbladder, stomach, and duodenum, rendered in hand-coloured copperplate engraving. Ideal for collectors of medical prints, educators, or interior design with a scientific twist.

This is an original 200-year-old engraving from A System of Anatomical Plates of the Human Body, published in Edinburgh (1823–1827) by John Lizars

Approximate size: Folio (434 × 270 mm)

John Lizars studied under Edinburgh surgeon John Bell and later taught anatomy and surgery in the city. His brother, William Home Lizars (1788–1859), engraved all plates on copper. “The book was costly to produce, for the engravings or etchings were, as usual, time-consuming, and the coloring was done skillfully and painstakingly by hand” (Roberts & Tomlinson, The Fabric of the Body, pp. 504–505). “This superb atlas is certainly one of the most elegant works of the nineteenth century” (Cushing L313). Referenced in Heirs of Hippocrates 1436; Waller 5950; Wellcome III: 531.

Please note: These plates are nearly 200 years old and may show minor foxing, toning, dust marks, or closed tears to outer margins—entirely acceptable for their age.
