Description
This is a rare, original 19th-century anatomical plate from William Hunter’s seminal work The Anatomy of the Human Gravid Uterus Exhibited in Figures, first published in 1774 and reproduced sparingly in the 19th century. This monumental work remains one of the most important contributions to obstetric and anatomical illustration.
Printed in Latin, this large-format copperplate engraving features highly detailed black and white illustrations depicting stages of pregnancy and uterine anatomy with remarkable clarity. It measures approximately 54 cm high by 35 cm wide, making it suitable for framing or scholarly display.
This is not a reproduction. It is an authentic, untouched original with clear impressions and intricate line work. Light foxing, small edge tear, and tone staining —typical for pieces of this age and size—but the main illustration remains clean and well-preserved.
William Hunter; Jan van Rymsdyk, Published by the Sydenham Society, London 1851 from the original copperplate of 1774.
