A finely engraved Victorian portrait of John Moore, M.D., taken from the original painting once held by Charles Macintosh, F.R.S., of Dunchattan. Published by Blackie & Son, Glasgow, Edinburgh & London. A crisp, elegant 19th‑century impression with generous margins — ideal for collectors of Scottish history, medicine, and Enlightenment‑era figures.

This 19th‑century engraved portrait depicts John Moore, M.D. (1729–1802) — Scottish physician, travel writer, and father of Sir John Moore, the celebrated British general. Moore’s writings, including A View of Society and Manners in France, Switzerland and Germany, were widely read across Enlightenment Britain and contributed to contemporary understandings of continental culture and medicine.

The engraving is taken “from the original in the possession of Charles Macintosh, Esquire, F.R.S., Dunchattan”, a detail that anchors the plate firmly within Glasgow’s intellectual and industrial heritage. Issued by Blackie & Son, one of Scotland’s most important Victorian publishers, the portrait belongs to the firm’s tradition of high‑quality biographical and historical plates.

Printed on wove paper with a clear platemark and wide margins, the portrait presents beautifully for framing. A refined example of Victorian antiquarian portraiture with strong Scottish provenance.
