Historical Context
John Lizars studied under the eminent Edinburgh surgeon John Bell and later taught anatomy and surgery in the city. The plates were engraved on copper by his brother, William Home Lizars (1788–1859).
This superb atlas is regarded as one of the most elegant anatomical works of the nineteenth century. The engravings were painstakingly produced and coloured by hand, making each example subtly unique.
