By John Lizars  - featuring the elegant diagonal sweep of the sartorius muscle, alongside the detailed musculature of the anterior thigh, this plate illustrates the layered anatomy of the lower limb.

An original 200-year-old hand-coloured anatomical engraving from A System of Anatomical Plates of the Human Body by John Lizars, published in Edinburgh between 1823 and 1827. A striking museum-quality study of the human thigh, combining scientific precision with refined nineteenth-century engraving.

Historical Context

John Lizars studied under the eminent Edinburgh surgeon John Bell and later taught anatomy and surgery in the city. The plates were engraved on copper by his brother, William Home Lizars (1788–1859).

This superb atlas is regarded as one of the most elegant anatomical works of the nineteenth century. The engravings were painstakingly produced and coloured by hand, making each example subtly unique.

Condition

The plate is approximately 200 years old and has light margin staining, , minor dust marks,  consistent with age.
