An exceptional original hand-coloured copper engraving from A System of Anatomical Plates of the Human Body by John Lizars, published in Edinburgh, 1823–1827. Now approaching 200 years old, this large folio anatomical plate (approx. 49cm x 34cm) presents a detailed study of the male pelvic organs, including the bladder, prostate gland, seminal vesicles, vas deferens, penis in cross-section, testicles with spermatic cords, and rectum with surrounding musculature — rendered with remarkable clarity and precision.
The plates were engraved on copper by William Home Lizars and meticulously coloured by hand, a labour-intensive process that makes each surviving example subtly unique. Lizars, who studied under the eminent Edinburgh surgeon John Bell, produced what is widely regarded as one of the most elegant anatomical atlases of the nineteenth century. A rare and highly decorative medical engraving, ideal for collectors of antique medical prints, early surgical illustration, or refined heritage interiors.
