A charming early 19th‑century Regency portrait of a young girl, painted in the circle of celebrated Scottish artist Henry Raeburn. The sitter is shown in an empire‑line dress with delicate flowers and a butterfly motif, symbols of innocence and youth typical of the period.
The painting displays the soft modelling, warm palette and atmospheric background associated with Raeburn’s Edinburgh school. Professionally conserved and revarnished in 1994, with an earlier Aitken Dott & Son (Castle Street, Edinburgh) framer’s label to the reverse.
A beautiful and authentic example of Scottish Regency portraiture.
Unsigned, as is typical for early 19th‑century British portraiture. Portraits of this period were private family commissions and were rarely signed by the artist.
