Anatomy Plate 1. The Heart
Post Mortem Anatomical Drawing - circa 1844
A scientific decorative anatomical plate from a 19th‑century medical atlas, reimagined as a contemporary wall piece — detailed for study, striking for display.
This antique post-mortem medical illustration presents a detailed anatomical study of the **upper torso**, focusing on the heart, lungs, and major blood vessels. The colour-coded depiction highlights the circulatory system, with red and blue tones distinguishing oxygenated and deoxygenated blood flow. The numbered labels suggest it was used for educational or medical reference, 19th-century surgical.
"a view of the commencement of the great artery (aorta) as it issues from the heart, together with the leading branches, which carry the blood to the head and upper extremities; and the trunk of the great vein ( vena cava bel magna), which returns the blood from the same parts. In order to bring these different objects into view, the sternum and the fore-part of the ribs have been removed, together with part of the clavicle at each side; the pericardium, or heart-purse, is opened, and the front of it removed, so as to expose the heart itself."
