An Exquisite Pair of 19th Century (or earlier) Portraits. Framed set of Oil Paintings on Canvas. Continental School.
The focal point of the first portrait features the gentleman draped in an exquisite blue silk gown, symbolising his status and standing in society. Seated in a high-backed chair, the gentleman holds a religious book in his hands, specifically identified as the "Book of Acts" or the "Acts of the Apostles."
The second portrait showcases the woman adorned in an enchanting blue silk and velvet cloak, elegantly cascading around her figure, accentuating her status as an esteemed lady of prominence. Notably, she holds three cherries in her left hand, an emblem rich with symbolism. Cherries were often associated with abundance, fertility and love.
The canvases have been re-backed at some stage in their lives and the frames are of a later date.
