Scottish School triple portrait, oil on canvas, late 19th Century (circa 1889- 1891).  The subjects are 3 brothers from the well known Glasgow family of the Samuel Dow Wine Merchant dynasty (see below). This evocative painting shows the brothers attired in typical Victorian Highland Dress of the time complete with bonnets, kilts, sporrans and socks with sgian-dubh. Highly decorative. Shown in a gilt edged frame for illustration purpose only.  

Dimensions: 127cm ( 4ft 2 inches) x 115 cm ( 3ft 91/2 inches)

Condition: unframed, unsigned, as found condition, small tear to kilt area, abrasion bttm right, surface dirt, small mark to face of right hand boy.

Like many families in this period (1914 - 1918) the Dow family lost their two youngest sons Alexander and Samuel to the ravages of the Great War. The eldest, John went on to continue the family business well into the 20th Century and passed it on to his son Samuel named after his brother lost in the Great War.
