A very well executed Victorian oil on canvas portrait of John Russel, partner in the Edinburgh law firm Russel & Aitken* circa 1881. Sitting in its original carved gilt frame (two minor losses as shown) the work is unsigned but the artist is clearly trained and accomplished in the specialised field of portrait painting of the time. Most likely the artist was working in Edinburgh around this time this aspect requires further investigation. (Labelled verso with Edinburgh picture framers label of the period)

*The company was founded in Falkirk by James Aitken in 1792 and in 1818 was joined by James Russel making the firm of Russel + Aitken and is therefore thought to be the oldest legal firm on Scotland trading under the same name for almost 200 years!
